Murtovaara briefly

The Murtovaara House Museum offers you a glimpse into the life of a family of forest rangers. The farm consists of 16 buildings built in a traditional way by using only wood. Even the roofs are made of birchbark, which was common until the 19th century.

You can sense the special atmosphere already upon arrival. The half a kilometer long footpath lingers through the woods until the view opens to the meadows which are surrounding the traditional Eastern Finnish courtyard.

The Murtovaara House Museum is maintained by the foundation of Karelian culture KKES.

The huge oven was the heating system and the stove at the same time.
The smoke cabins were heated by stoves made of stone. To keep the heat inside they did not have any chimney. Picture by Risto Kuittinen
